Things To Do In The Green

The warmer months here in Northeastern Vermont are filled with a tremendous array of things to do and see for the casual sightseer, the active adventure seeker, and all those in between.

Beginning in spring the Northeast Kingdom offers some of the world’s finest maple sugar farms. Maple sugar season lasts about four to six weeks from late February to early April but many of these “Sugar Shacks”, such as Maple Grove Farms or The Sugar Mill Farm, are open the year round for tours.

Orleans County is holding its 140th annual fair this August right here in Barton, while the Bread and Puppet Theater is down the street in Glover with performances every Friday and Saturday night during July & August.

There are also two great golf courses only minutes away.  The Barton Golf Club is only about ten miles down the road and welcomes the public.  Then, one exit north on route 91, is the Newport Country Club, which also welcomes the public.

Newport itself has a beautiful downtown area that sits on Lake Memphremagog.  Lake Memphremagog is a glacial lake with deep inviting water; it invites swimmers, anglers, and boaters.   If you would like to stay in town to enjoy one of the many beautiful lakes here in Northern Vermont, Barton is the home of Crystal Lake.  It is also a glacial lake with stunning cliffs that continue far below the surface in some places over 100 feet in depth.  Over three miles long and one mile wide, the sandy beach spanning its width is lined with picnic tables and charcoal grills for all to enjoy.

In the fall the world famous foliage is enough to take your breath away.  Depending on the weather, seasonal changes become evident around early September and the culmination of color generally peaks somewhere between late September and mid-October.  The scenery is outstanding, and with over 75,000 acres of public forest park lands in the Northeast Kingdom there are extensive hiking trails and picnic areas to enjoy it.   Also, these parks along with Jay Peak, Burke Mountain, and the Craftsbury Outdoor Center are home to some of the best Mountain Biking in New England.

The autumn season in Northern Vermont is also known for its exceptional hunting.  White-tail Deer, Black Bear, Moose, Wild Turkey, and Ruffed Grouse are some of the many native species to the area.  Through a combination of public and private land made open for public use there is well over 250,000 acres of public access land available for hunting in the Northeast Kingdom.

If nothing else you can enjoy the Barton River during the day and roasting marshmallows by the fire at night while staying here at the Pine Crest Motel and Cabins.  Amidst the high-paced speed of life we are happy to offer an escape to quiet country living here in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont.
